JBL C38 Baron S12 WX Vintage HiFi Speakers LE14A LE20 LX8 C-38 Lustig Walnut S38 Picture(s) and Description:

JBL C38 Baron S12 WX Vintage HiFi Speakers LE14A LE20 LX8 C-38 Lustig Walnut S38 60’s Era w/ Aluminum Legs & Goat Hair Grilles! MUST SEE Two Original JBL C38 S12WX Speakers Today the name JBL is so commonplace that practically any person can tell you what they do, make speakers. Although long before JBL was a name of a company these 3 letters were the initials of a man who almost single handedly shaped the audio industry to what it is today. James Bullough Lansing was one of the very few people in the audio industry who had a true gift for audio engineering, it was something he was born to do. In the year 1914 at the age of 12 Lansing built a transmitter so powerful it interfered with operations at a US naval base 300 miles away, government officials were sent to his home to dismantle the transmitter and issue a stern warning never to build one again. This warning may have swayed him to devote his efforts to one particular aspect of audio, loudspeaker design. More than any other single person James B. Lansing is responsible for the development of the high fidelity speaker. His speaker designs and theories created in the 1920’s still serve as the foundations in which all speakers built today are based upon. His genius has been attributed to his unquenchable thirst for perfection, a perfection which is reflected in the products he produced and the products that continued to be produced by his company long after he passed on. The JBL C38 speaker system was originally introduced in the mid 1950’s with a production run until 1970 and was available is several different driver configurations. It is a minimum volume reflex enclosure engineered to deliver full range response when used with JBL extended range speakers. Its versatility and relatively small size made it a long standing favorite in JBL’s product line, yet its look and style is what makes it increasingly popular today. The C38 cabinet was designed by Alvin Lustig, who is widely considered a major influence of the American modern design era. The design aspects of the C38 fit perfectly with mid-century modern décor and has a timeless look that only gets better with age. Though the cabinet always remained true to the original Lustig design, cosmetic variations occurred throughout its 15 year production run. In 1960 the C38 picked up the Baron name and traded in its wood peg legs for the ultra-modern aluminum billet legs that are rumored to have been designed by George Nelson. JBL also offered the C38’s with additional grille cloth options in this era. The pair of C38’s in this auction are OEM factory built and from the final year of production, 1970. They feature the desirable aluminum legs and optional cream colored goat hair entwined grilles. They have the S12 driver configuration which consists of the LE14A 14” woofers, LE20 tweeters, and LX8 crossovers. The system as a whole provides outstanding sound reproduction over the entire frequency range. it produces large speaker sound from a relatively small enclosures. Its sound is alive, dynamic and thoroughly musical, high-range, mid-range, and low range reproduction are all coherent and detailed. Other features of the C38 Barron S12 system include: JBL LE14A 14” Woofers The LE14A’s are well known for their ability to create full, spacious, well-defined bass response in enclosures as small as 1.6 cubic feet. The very large 4 inch edge wound copper ribbon voice coil is immersed in an intense magnetic field, generated by a massive magnetic assembly, allowing it to follow the audio signal with unerring fidelity. Each part of the 11.5 lbs. magnetic assembly is precisely machined and assembled which concentrates all of the essential magnetomotive energy, provided by a powerful Grain oriented Alnico V magnet, in the one place where it contributes most to loudspeaker performance--the voice coil gap. the 4-inch voice coil is fabricated of wire milled to a flat ribbon, wound on the ribbon's edge by hand. It drives a shallow, integrally stiffened, curvilinear cone that delivers uniform, wide-angle distribution of sound energy through the full range of the loudspeaker. The woofer has outstanding smooth low frequency performance. All this integrated in a well-built precision cast aluminum frame. JBL LE20 Tweeters This ultra-high frequency transducer, with an effective diameter of 1.4", give silky, effortless delineation of high-pitched transients and musical overtones, reaching full output above 7 kHz. The copper voice coil and Alnico magnet are unusually large in relation to the cone size for high efficiency and exceptional transient response. The small cone diameter is responsible for wide, uniform dispersion of high frequency energy.. JBL LX8 Crossover The model LX8 Dividing Network is a 2-way crossover featuring high-grade design and construction; only the finest components and parts were used. The LX8 does much more than direct low, and high frequency information to the appropriate reproducer. It precisely controls the transition frequencies to eliminate all transitional-distortion providing the absolute smoothest response curves from the lowest to the highest frequencies. It is mounted on a molded plastic panel for easy installation in a single hole cut in the mounting board. A 3 position control is provided so that the intensity of the high frequency transducer can be adjusted for optimum balance to suit your personal listening taste and to compensate for the effect of room acoustics. This network gives a 12 db per octave acoustic attenuation on each side of the crossover frequency. And Much More! The Lans-a-Loy surrounds on the LE14a’s were recently replaced with foam surrounds of the same stiffness and weight as the originals. This is a must, as the original Lans-a-Loy surrounds stiffen with age which greatly diminishes LF response. All drivers are operating flawlessly with no issues. Cosmetically cabinets are clean, though there are some blemishes evident upon close inspection. There are some minor scratches variously located. There is one ding on left/top corner, about midway. There is a veneer repair on the front/top left side corner of one cab that is not very noticeable. One grille cloth has a small hole in it.
